Uh-Oh (for Florida, Cuba and Mexico this time)
Well, well, well, there's still 6 weeks of the hurricane season left and guess what, we've tied a record for the most hurricanes in a season. We've had 21 hurricanes, and we've run out of names and are going to have to go to the Greek alphabet if another forms. This one, it's named Wilma by the way, has decided to become a gigantic storm. At this moment, Hurricane Wilma, is a gigantic Category 5 storm that's headed towards Mexico and Cuba before turning and heading towards southern Florida. By that time, it's expected it will be at least slightly weaker than. Anyway, wind speeds are topping 160 mph. The pressure of the system is tied for the lowest pressure ever recorded in the United States with the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 at 892 mb (26.34 inches). The lowest pressure every recorded was 888 mb measured in Hurricane Gilbert. In the next 72 hours, it's expected that Wilma will turn and start heading for the southern tip of Florida. That's what's going on with Hurricane Wilma right now. The only other thing of note to report is that Saddam Hussein and his seven co-defendants went today to court charged with ordering the killings and torture of more than 140 Iraqis in Dujail in 1982 following an attempt to assassinate Hussein when he was visiting the town. Alright, that's pretty much all the news of interest for right now. I'll leave you with a projected path of Hurricane Wilma, courtesy of the National Hurricane Center, and a picture of Wilma superimposed over a satellite image, courtesy of Google Earth and the National Hurricane Center.
